This nationally recognised unit develops the hands-on skills and practical knowledge required to carry out vertical rescues in a variety of emergency situations- across both natural and manmade environments. Whether working from cliffs, towers, caves, or cranes, you’ll learn to assess rescue scenes, establish safe and effective rescue systems, and perform technical rescues using rope-based equipment.

Designed for members of emergency services, volunteer groups, and related industries, this course focuses on working as part of a team in dynamic, high-risk environments. You’ll apply WHS/OHS principles, manage edge protection, and use industry-standard equipment including industrial fall arrest systems, PPE, and stretchers.

You'll gain practical experience in:

  • Preparing for and respond to vertical rescue incidents
  • Conducting thorough risk and scene assessments
  • Setting up and operating a variety of safe vertical rescue systems
  • Using stretchers and industrial fall arrest systems in rescue operations
  • Working safely and efficiently as part of a rescue team
  • Preserving incident sites
  • Maintaining and servicing rescue equipment
  • Contributing to operational briefings and debriefings

This course is highly practical and physically demanding. You must be able to work at height, ascend and descend ropes, and operate in challenging environments. Prior experience working at heights and using safety equipment such as harnesses, lanyards, and fall protection systems is recommended.
